AEGEE strives for a democratic, diverse and borderless Europe, which is socially, economically and politically integrated, and values the participation of young people in its construction and development.
The recent political developments in Poland are concerning us as young Europeans because they are a threat to the Europe we strive for.
Democracy is a core value for AEGEE. The separation of powers is fundamental for a functioning democracy, and currently it is under attack in Poland. Two bills passed by the Polish parliament enable the government to influence the dismissal and appointment of judges, and a third bill allows the Justice minister to choose the members of the Supreme Court.
This proves once more that democratisation process never finishes and establishing institutions is not enough in order to ensure lasting democracy – civically educated citizens are needed. AEGEE’s strength is creating European citizens, who are critical, active and ready to take a stand when necessary.
We express our solidarity with thousands of Polish citizens who peacefully protest against the bills of the government in many towns and cities all over Poland.
